I took an oyster shell and put a small block of absorbent rotten wood in it. I just filled it with kitchen oil and lit it after the wood had wicked up the oil. It worked fine, if a little smoky, and burned for about 10 minutes of a half full shell. If you wanted I'm sure you could use rendered animal fat instead. A nice quick paleo-power lamp.
